Why does the weather in the Netherlands change so quickly?

You set off under a blue sky and half an hour later you're cycling through a heavy downpour. And just as you finally have your raincoat on, the sun breaks through again. Very relatable in the Netherlands.

But why can our weather actually change so quickly?

We are located right between sea and land

The Netherlands is situated on the North Sea, with the Atlantic Ocean close by. Mild and humid sea air often heads our way from the west. But the wind can just as easily bring in cooler air from the north or dry air from the east.

These different air masses meet above or near our country. And it is precisely at such a boundary that the weather can change quickly. The sun disappears, the wind picks up, and suddenly it starts to rain.

Because the Netherlands is small, you sometimes notice this even by location. It might be pouring down where you are, while it’s perfectly dry ten kilometers away.

A rain shower arrives quickly, but is often gone just as fast

The wind drives showers from the sea across our country. As a result, a dark sky can approach quite quickly. Fortunately, that also means that such a shower often moves on again.

What do you wear in true Dutch weather?

For me, this is exactly the weather where a light raincoat is most useful. Not a thick winter coat when it's still mild, but something that keeps out wind and rain. A jacket that you can wear open when the sun breaks through and zip up quickly as soon as the first drops fall.

Layers also work well. With a T-shirt, cardigan, and raincoat, you can adapt much more easily than with one very warm layer.
