For many, summer is the perfect season to get out and about.
Maybe you enjoy an evening stroll, or you're training for a walking tour, like the Nijmegen Marches. Or perhaps you regularly walk your dog and plan to explore during your vacation.
Whatever the reason: good preparation makes every walk more comfortable and enjoyable.
With these 8 tips, you'll be well-prepared.
1. Wear shoes you trust
A long walk is not the time to try out new shoes.
Always wear shoes that are well broken in and that your feet feel comfortable in.
It's best to test new shoes during shorter walks first.

2. Think in layers
The weather can change quickly during a walk.
Chilly in the morning, warm in the afternoon, and perhaps a shower by the end of the day.
By wearing clothes in layers, you can easily put something on or take it off.
A light rain jacket or softshell is therefore often a smart choice.

3. Bring enough water
Especially on warm summer days, you lose a lot of fluid without realizing it.
Don't wait until you're thirsty, but drink small amounts regularly.
For longer walks, a refillable water bottle is actually essential.
4. Protect yourself from the sun
Even if the temperature is mild, the sun can be quite strong.
Therefore, don't forget:
☀️ Sunscreen
☀️ A cap or hat
☀️ Sunglasses
☀️ To regularly seek shade
Your skin will thank you.
5. Be prepared for an unexpected shower

We naturally hope for sun, but we do live in the Netherlands. 😉
A light rain jacket, compact umbrella, or foldable poncho takes up little space and can make a walk much more pleasant if the weather changes.

6. Don't forget your feet
A lot of walking pleasure starts with healthy feet.
Wear good socks, take care of any sensitive spots in time, and bring blister plasters for longer distances if necessary.
A little preparation can prevent a lot of discomfort.
7. Test new gear first
New backpack? New rain jacket? New walking clothes?
Test everything during a shorter walk first.
This way, you'll be sure everything fits comfortably before you embark on a longer trip.
8. Enjoy the surroundings

This tip may sound obvious but is often forgotten.
Many people focus on their pace, distance, or number of steps while walking.
Take a moment to look around you.
It's precisely the peace, nature, and fresh air that make walking so enjoyable.
What jacket do you take on a summer walk?
During a walk, you want to be able to move comfortably without getting too hot.
A good summer jacket is therefore:
✔️ Lightweight
✔️ Waterproof
✔️ Breathable
✔️ Easy to carry
This way, you're prepared for changeable weather without having to carry unnecessarily much.
