Why does it often rain after a hot summer day?

The past few days have been scorching hot.

What I find so funny is that by the end of the day, I suddenly saw people sheltering under an awning.
And barely an hour earlier, everyone was basking in the sun.

Sound familiar?

After a warm summer day, it often seems like the weather suddenly changes. Dark clouds appear out of nowhere, and before you know it, it's raining cats and dogs.

But why does that happen so often?

Warm air is full of moisture

On warm days, the air can hold much more moisture than on cold days.

As the temperature rises, more water evaporates from ditches, lakes, rivers, and the soil. That moisture, as it were, lingers in the warm air.

When that warm air rises later in the day and cools, clouds form, and eventually rain.

Why are summer showers often so intense?

An autumn shower can last for hours, but a summer shower is often short and powerful.

This is because there is a lot of energy present in the atmosphere on warm days.

When that energy is released, it often happens all at once.

That's why summer showers are regularly accompanied by:

⚡ Thunder and lightning
💨 Gusts of wind
🌨️ Sometimes even hail

Why are you so often surprised in the summer?

Because almost no one brings a rain jacket when it's 28 degrees. 😉

You leave with sunshine, go for a walk, bike ride, or grab a drink on a terrace, and simply don't think about rain.

That's precisely why a summer shower often feels unexpected.

What to bring when the weather changes?

Of course, you don't need to go out with a full backpack.

But a few smart choices can prevent a lot of discomfort.

For example, consider:

Especially in summer, you want to be protected from rain without getting too hot.

Why does rain smell so good after warm weather?

Perhaps you recognize it.

After a warm day, the first raindrops fall, and suddenly there's a special scent in the air.
