One moment you're enjoying the sun.
Half an hour later?
Dark skies, gusts of wind, and within minutes, water is pouring down in buckets.
And while you're taking shelter, someone ten kilometers away texts:
"Rain? The sun is shining here."
Welcome to a Dutch summer. π
But why are those summer showers often so incredibly intense?

It all starts with heat
On warm summer days, the sun heats the earth's surface.
The air directly above the ground also warms up. Warm air is lighter than cold air and can rise.
At the same time, warm air can contain a lot of water vapor.
When that warm, moist air rises quickly, it reaches colder air layers higher in the atmosphere.
The water vapor condenses and forms clouds.
If conditions are favorable, these clouds can rapidly grow into enormous storm clouds.

Why does so much rain fall at once?
A heavy summer shower contains an enormous amount of moisture.
When large amounts of moist air rise and cool, countless water droplets and ice crystals form in the cloud.
When the water droplets eventually become heavy enough, they fall down.
During a powerful summer shower, this doesn't happen gently, drop by drop.
An enormous amount of water can fall in a short time.
That's why a street that was bone dry ten minutes earlier can suddenly be flooded.

And why does it sometimes not rain in the next village?
That's also typical for summer showers.
They often arise very locally.
A strong storm cloud can release enormous amounts of rain over a relatively small area, while hardly anything falls a few kilometers away.
That's why a weather app on summer days sometimes seems completely wrong.
Rain is predicted.
But that one shower just doesn't fall over your head.
Or, of course, it does. π
Why is there often thunder and lightning?
In large storm clouds, powerful rising and falling air currents are present.
Water droplets, ice crystals, and hail move through each other. This can cause electrical charges in the cloud to separate.
If the difference in electrical charge becomes large enough, a discharge follows.
Lightning.
The air around the lightning channel rapidly becomes extremely hot and suddenly expands.
We hear that shockwave as thunder.
A summer shower is often short, but intense
That's actually the big difference compared to much of the rain in autumn and winter.
Summer rain often comes from heavy showers that originate locally and can produce a lot of precipitation in a short time.
And that's precisely why you can leave in the morning with a clear blue sky and suddenly find yourself in a downpour in the afternoon.
Typically a day when a rain jacket turns out to be useful after all. π
Should we find summer rain annoying then?
Actually, no.
After a warm day, such a shower can be wonderfully refreshing.
Nature gets water, the temperature drops, and that typical smell of rain reappears.
And sometimes, after that, even the most beautiful gift of rain and sun together appears:
a rainbow. π
